ATISA X Conference - Travel Information

The 2022 ATISA conference will be held on the UC Santa Barbara campus at UCen.

Conference participants have several options to travel to Santa Barbara, CA, with several different ways to get around once there!

COVID-19 Information: International travel regulations and guidelines change regularly as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees should consult with the CDC guidelines for international travel prior to making their arrangements. In addition, the UC Santa Barbara campus regularly provides updates regarding visitors to campus, vaccine, testing, and masking requirements. Getting There

By Plane

Two airports are available to participants traveling to UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA)

SBA is the closest airport to UC Santa Barbara. From the airport:

  • You can take a taxi or ride-sharing service to your hotel or to the UCSB University Center at Lot 3.
  • You can take SBMTD public transportation via the 11 line to the UCSB Bus Loop.

Average ride-share rate: $10 (one way)
Bus: $1.75 (line 11). All fares are one-way and may be paid with coins or bills. Fareboxes do not give change and drivers cannot make change. Exact Change is required. Additional information is available here.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

The nearest airport servicing all major airlines is LAX. From the airport:

  • We recommend taking the Santa Barbara Airbus (please see more in "Travel by bus" below) directly from your arrival terminal to the Goleta stop.
  • You can also rent a car and drive north to Goleta (approx 105 miles; can be anywhere from 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes, depending on the horrors of traffic through Los Angeles.

By Bus

There are several options to ride the bus both to the conference venue as well as once you arrive.

SBMTD

If you are traveling locally within Santa Barbara County, you can take SBMTD public transportation to the UCSB Bus Loop. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help you find your way to us!

Santa Barbara Airbus

If you are arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), you can take the Santa Barbara Airbus directly from your LAX terminal to the Goleta stop. Please make sure that you choose a departure time that will allow you enough time to check in at the airport. For departing flights, the airport suggests arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before domestic flights, and 3 hours before international flights. You will also want to take into account travel time as there may be traffic that impacts your bus trip.

Price: one-way- approx. $50 / person (plus taxes)
Duration: approx. 3 hours

Once you read the Goleta Airbus stop:

  • You can take a taxi or ride-sharing service (e.g., Uber, Lyft) to your hotel or to the UCSB University Center at Lot 3. We will be happy to organize a ride for you from the Airbus station to your destination - please contact us in advance to let us know.
  • You can take SBMTD public transportation via the 6 or 11 lines to the UCSB Bus Loop.

Greyhound

Greyhound buses can be used to travel from around California to the Santa Barbara bus station.

From the Santa Barbara bus station:

  • You can take a taxi or ride-sharing service to your hotel or to the UCSB University Center at Lot 3.
  • You can take SBMTD public transportation via the 24X or 11 lines to the UCSB Bus Loop.

By Car

A permit must be displayed to park on the UCSB campus. Permits may be purchased from the permit dispensers located in lots throughout campus. Please visit https://www.tps.ucsb.edu/parking-permits/visitor-short-term-permit for information about parking.

Travelling South on US 101 Freeway

  • Exit the 101 Freeway at the Storke Road / Glen Annie Road (Exit 108) off-ramp (approximately 12 miles north of Santa Barbara).
  • Turn right onto Storke Road and continue to El Colegio Road.
  • Turn left onto El Colegio Road and proceed to Ocean Road.
  • Turn left onto Ocean Road and continue to Mesa Road.
  • Turn right onto Mesa Road and proceed to the traffic signal at University Plaza.
  • Turn right at the traffic signal and proceed to the 4-way stop.
    Turn right at the 4-way stop and follow directions into the parking garage at Lot 18.

Travelling North on US 101 Freeway

  • Exit the 101 Freeway at the Airport / UCSB (Route 217) off-ramp (approximately eight miles north of Santa Barbara) and proceed through the Henley Gate at the east campus entrance.
  • Veer right onto Mesa Road and continue to the traffic signal at University Plaza.
  • Turn left at the traffic signal and proceed to the 4-way stop.
  • Turn right at the 4-way stop and follow directions into the parking garage at Lot 18.

By Train

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

The Pacific Surfliner train runs along the California coast between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. The train stop closest to UC Santa Barbara is located at Goleta.

From the Goleta Amtrak stop:

  • You can take a taxi or ride-sharing service to your hotel or to the UCSB University Center at Lot 3.
  • You can take SMBTD public transportation via the 12X or 11 lines to the UCSB Bus Loop.

Amtrak Coast Starlight

The Coast Starlight train runs from Los Angeles up to the Bay Area. The train stop closest to UCSB is located at Santa Barbara.

From the Santa Barbara Amtrack stop:

  • You can take a taxi or ride-sharing service to your hotel or to the UCSB University Center at Lot 3.
  • You can take SMBTD public transportation via the 24X line to the UCSB Bus Loop.

Getting Around

UC Santa Barbara is located in a small town, Goleta, approximately 7 miles north of Santa Barbara.

  • Distance from downtown to UCSB: 10 miles
  • Distance from Goleta Market Place to UCSB: 2.5 miles
  • Distance from Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) to UCSB: 0.7 miles

There are lots of way to get around town and the surrounding areas once you are here, from ride share apps like Lyft and Uber, to public transporation. Make sure to double-check schedules and prices, since current operating conditions are subject to change.
